Medicare Part C/Medicare Advantage - Compass Insurance Advisors
  • What is Medicare Part C?

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is a collection of health plan options with approved Medicare benefits offered by private companies. Medicare Part C is available in many areas of the country.

The premium for Medicare Part C is not based on health, and coverage can’t be denied because of health. Medicare pays a set amount to the plan for care.

Who is eligible for Medicare Part C?

To be eligible for Medicare Advantage, you must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.

Those with Medicare Part C are still in the Original Medicare (the federal program). Three groups of people are eligible for these plans:

    • people 65 years and older
    • people under 65 years with certain disabilities
    • and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease.

Beneficiaries who enroll in Medicare Part C will still have Medicare rights and protections, and will still get all the Medicare-covered services. Beneficiaries will get one card, one bill, and one Explanation of Benefits.

What is covered by Medicare Part C?

Medicare Advantage covers everything in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B, and may also cover extra benefits, such as vision, hearing, dental care, and fitness membership. Beneficiaries may also receive prescription drug coverage.

Some Medicare Advantage plans may also offer extra benefits such as:

    • Safety devices for the home that reduce the risk of injury, including bathroom safety devices or personal emergency response systems
    • Transportation to health-related services, such as the doctor’s office or pharmacy
    • Emergency care coverage outside the country
    • Over-the counter medications
    • Adult day-care services

Plans may also offer a range of extra benefits for members with certain chronic health conditions, including personal care services like housekeeping, dressing, and home delivery meal services.

Some Medicare Advantage plans also offer membership in SilverSneakers, which is a popular exercise program for older adults. Membership provides access to more than 15,000 participating locations nationwide, including gyms, wellness centers, and YMCAs.

When can you sign up for Medicare Advantage?

Beneficiaries can sign up for Medicare Part C during the Annual Election Period each year, during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period each year, or during a Special Election Period.
